Texas Health Steps and CHIP Well-Child Checkups
What’s Covered and Why They’re Important
A Healthy Kid is a Happy Kid!
As parents, we want to protect our children and help them stay healthy. The best way to do this is to take them to the doctor regularly for recommended checkups, also called well-child visits, annual exams, physicals, and Texas Health Steps (for Medicaid Members).
There is no cost for Texas Health Steps checkups or CHIP well-child checkups for Community First Medicaid and CHIP Members.
What is Texas Health Steps?
Texas Health Steps is a Medicaid program for children in the STAR Medicaid, STAR Kids, and STAR+PLUS programs. Medicaid Members get Texas Health Steps checkups from birth through 20 years of age.
The Texas Health Steps program includes:
- No-cost regular medical checkups starting at birth.
- No-cost dental checkups starting at 6 months.
- A case manager who can find out what services your child needs and where to get these services.
Any Texas Health Steps provider can give Members their checkups and immunizations.
What are CHIP Well-Child Checkups?
CHIP Members get well-child checkups from birth through 18 years of age. Make an appointment with your child’s primary care provider to schedule wellness exams and vaccinations. You can find the name and contact information for their primary care provider on their Community First Member ID card and on the Community First Member Portal
Copayments do not apply to CHIP well-child checkups.
