Effective January 1, 2027
The American Medical Association (AMA) has released significant revisions to the CPT® Maternity Care Services section that will become effective January 1, 2027. These changes affect how maternity care services are reported and include the introduction of new labor management codes and the deletion of several longstanding maternity package codes.
Community First is currently reviewing these revisions and will provide additional guidance as more information becomes available. Providers should monitor future communications for detailed information regarding these changes and any related billing or reimbursement requirements.
Community First will post additional updates and provider notices in the coming months. Please watch for future communications.
Key Changes
Beginning January 1, 2027:
- Antepartum care will be reported using appropriate Evaluation and Management (E/M) codes.
- New labor management codes (59080-59083) will be used to report inpatient labor management services.
- Delivery care will be reported separately using revised vaginal and cesarean delivery codes.
- Postpartum care will be reported using appropriate E/M codes.
- Numerous existing global maternity package codes will be deleted.
New Labor Management Codes

| 59432 | Vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) |
| 59502 | Primary cesarean delivery |
| 59503 | Repeat cesarean delivery |
What Providers Should Do
Providers are encouraged to:
- Review the CPT® 2027 maternity care revisions.
- Assess coding and billing workflows for maternity services.
- Educate coding, billing, and clinical staff regarding the new reporting requirements.
- Monitor future communications regarding reimbursement policies and implementation guidance.
