Test-taking can be a stressful experience for many students, whether it’s a high-stakes exam (ahem, STAAR testing) or a simple quiz. Use these quick tips and tricks to help your child feel their best – and hopefully perform their best – when the pressure is on.

Breakfast – The Most Important Meal of the Day! Start your student’s day with a breakfast fit for a champ. Think protein-packed eggs, brain-boosting fruit (blueberries, raspberries, strawberries), and a slice or two of whole-grain, hearty toast. Add a glass of milk or orange juice for extra fuel.

SleepThe Real Superpower. Getting enough sleep is essential. Make sure your kiddo is catching enough Z’s leading up to testing. A good night’s sleep is like a superpower for the brain and will help your child stay alert and focused during the test.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends that children aged 6–12 years should regularly sleep 9–12 hours per 24 hours and teenagers aged 13–18 years should sleep 8–10 hours per 24 hours.

CDC Healthy Schools

Good Vibes Only! A calm and positive home environment can help a child relax and focus during test taking. Easier said than done on busy, hectic, rushed mornings, but try to avoid arguments with your child and send them off to school with a smile. Provide encouragement and positive reinforcement to help them feel confident and prepared.

Don’t Be Late! One of the most important things parents can do to help their child succeed on test day is to ensure they arrive at school on time. Plan ahead and try to leave earlier than usual. Starting the day off on or ahead of schedule can set your child up for success and help them feel calm and focused.

Encourage, Encourage, Encourage! Take a few moments to wish them good luck and offer encouragement. Let them know they are special, unique, and capable of achieving their goals. You can help boost their confidence and motivation by expressing your belief in them.

Good luck to all our local students out there taking the STAAR test. We are rooting for you!
